On paper, I’m reading I SEE RUDE PEOPLE by the lovely Amy Alkon, who moderated my panel at the L.A. Times Festival of Books. It’s funny and smart and full of great tips on how to avoid allowing the rude people of the world to get the better of you…Take my advice: do not talk on your cell phone within earshot of this woman…

On audio, I’m reading A VISIT FROM THE GOON SQUAD. I was thrilled when I went to the library to look for a book on tape and found this book there. Felt like I’d hit the jackpot! So far, I’m finding it very involving, and I’m really loving the voice of Roxana Ortega.

Do you ever listen to audio books? I think the voice of the reader can make or break the experience…

On digital, I am reading nothing.

What are you reading? Is it any good?

  1. I loved Good Squad, and glad I read that, instead of listened. But yes, I listen to many books on audio, in the car. Some fabulous ones: “Georgiana: The Duchess of Devonshire”; “Point to Point Navigation,” Gore Vidal’s autobiography, which he himself reads (and how can you beat that?), and Stephen King’s “Hearts in Atlantis,” read by King and William Hurt, one of the most stunning and affecting works I have encountered. Reading now in book form: “Lives Other Than My Own” my Emanuel Carrere (if you have not read his book “The Advesary,” stop what you are doing and get it right now) and an advance copy of Susan Orlean’s “Rin Tin Tin: The Life and the Legend.”

Wow, Nancy! So many great suggestions here. I am printing up your comment and bringing it to the library with me next time I go looking for an audio book…

Your book, The Bad Mother, is the next one on my “to be read” stack…

I love Tis, by Frank McCourt, on audio. His beautiful Irish lilt is the perfect way to enjoy his literature. I find I can’t read his books now without hearing his voice in my ear!

I’ll have to check that out! I heard Eat, Pray, Love read by the author and it was wonderful – she has a beautiful voice!
