COALTOWN COVERThis novel in verse isn’t available until October 8, 2013. I’m reading an advance reading copy. But when it comes out RUN, don’t walk to the store (in your red converse sneakers) to buy it. It is original, witty, touching, funny, thought-provoking and deep. This book is so inspiring to me – both as a writer and as a reader. And also, as a human. I love this book.

On paper, I’m reading I SEE RUDE PEOPLE by the lovely Amy Alkon, who moderated my panel at the L.A. Times Festival of Books. It’s funny and smart and full of great tips on how to avoid allowing the rude people of the world to get the better of you…Take my advice: do not talk on your cell phone within earshot of this woman…

On audio, I’m reading A VISIT FROM THE GOON SQUAD. I was thrilled when I went to the library to look for a book on tape and found this book there. Felt like I’d hit the jackpot! So far, I’m finding it very involving, and I’m really loving the voice of Roxana Ortega.

Do you ever listen to audio books? I think the voice of the reader can make or break the experience…

On digital, I am reading nothing.

What are you reading? Is it any good?

cover of secrets at sea

On paper, I’m reading an advance reading copy of SECRETS AT SEA by Richard Peck. Full disclosure: he’s a friend of mine. But I would love this book anyway! It’s a rollicking adventure of a royal family of mice, and I’m laughing and cheering with every turn of the page…

On audio, I’m listening to THIS SIDE OF PARADISE by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and am enjoying the voice of the character, Amory Blaine, so naive and full of himself and insecure all at the same time. A lot is being added by the actor reading the story, Dick Hill, who is fabulous at capturing all the different voices!

On digital, I am reading…nothing.

Painted Veil, Unaccustomed Earth

Posted April 4th, 2011 by Sonya and filed in Uncategorized

On paper, I’m reading Unaccustomed Earth, by Jhumpa Lahiri, a moving and poetic collection of beautifully written short stories. They’re transporting me deep into another culture and I’m loving the journey. (Thanks to my friend Amy, for giving it to me for my birthday.)

Painted Veil, Unaccustomed EarthOn audio, I’m listening to Sophie Ward reading The Painted Veil by W. Somerset Maugham. It’s wonderful. And so racy for 1925! Living inside Kitty’s head, it becomes all too easy to see how people delude themselves.

On digital, I’m reading…nothing.

What are you reading? Is it any good? Let me know.
