When I first saw the photo for the cover of What My Girlfriend Doesn’t Know, I got a little worried. The girl’s hair was so short that I was afraid people would think she was a boy. And if they thought she was a boy, then maybe they’d think that what the boy’s girlfriend doesn’t know is that he’s gay.

So I took some alternate photos and showed them to the folks at Simon and Schuster:

Simon and Schuster liked their original cover photo better, though. So we compromised: we used their photo, but added a dangly earring so that the girl would look more girly.

I’m happy with the way it turned out. I think it will make people want to open up the book and look inside…
